Nubia Z11 MAX (Snapdragon): Octacore Performance, Premium Design

Powered by an Octacore Snapdragon processor and featuring ultra-thin metal body and a massive battery, Nubia Z11 is a premium mid-range phone that promises enhanced performance and great battery life. The mighty 6-inch Super AMOLED Full HD display translates into razor sharp images, vivid colors and impeccable viewing angles. Z11 Max contains all it takes to challenge the competition and is ready to take on other smartphones such as Huawei Mate 8 and Xiaomi Mi Max. The virtually bezel-less front and slim profile makes it easier to carry around and use the smartphone, despite its large size and big display.

Users are increasingly becoming interested in buying large-screen phones, which is also hurting the tablet sales. Why carry two separate devices when one smartphone can serve the purpose of both devices? Although phablets are not meant to be used with one hand, they are still portable enough to be carried around easily. Software features such as split-screen and one-hand-mode make it easier to use large-screen devices with one hand to a great extent. Z11 Max tries to capitalize on these features and offers a big 6-inch Super AMOLED display, which is a clear winner when it comes to deeper blacks, vivid colors and viewing angles. Everything looks just stunning whether it be videos, games, web pages or everyday stuff. The octacore Snapdragon processor coupled with 4 gigs of ram ensures a butter smooth user experience and offers some serious performance. Nubia Z11 Max is an excellent all-rounder and features almost everything users expect from a flagship phone.

The massive 6-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display is one of the most prominent features of the phone and works well even in the brightest lighting conditions. It offers punchy colors, deeper blacks and outstanding viewing angles that we expect from AMOLED displays. However, the oversaturated colors may not be according to everyone’s liking as some prefer more natural colors of LCDs. Additional settings to fine-tune the display allow such users to fine-tune the display according to their individual preferences. The Super AMOLED display also helps save quite a bit of power, especially while watching videos or reading with a black background. The display covers 100% NTSC color gamut and delivers vibrant, sharp and clears images.

Design and Build Quality

The excellent screen-to-body ratio makes the display appear almost bezel-less, while a 7.4mm slim profile and 2.5D curve design make the phablet easier to handle and operate. The metal body feels premium from every angle and make the smartphone quite a looker. Although it may not be possible for everyone to use the phone with one hand, it actually fits quite nicely in hand and only reaching the edges is a bit of a problem. The front housing the 8MP camera, three capacitive keys and proximity and light sensors is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The back is home to a fingerprint sensor and 16MP camera with dual-tone flash, while a 3.5mm headphone jack is located at the top and a USB Type-C connector at the bottom. The speakers are also nicely hidden behind a grille at the bottom. The overall build quality of the phablet is excellent, while the design is not only attractive, but also makes the device easier to use.

Performance and Battery life

The combo of a Snapdragon 652 Octacore processor, Adreno 510 GPU and 4 GB RAM provide everything users need for a remarkable user experience, gaming and everything else. Nubia Z11 Max is also available with MediaTek Helio P10 processor and 3 GB RAM, which is a good option if you want to save some money and don’t want the extra ooumph the snapdragon processors are known for. No matter which variant you buy, both are equally good in general usage, while the Snapdragon variant is better in gaming and other resource-intensive tasks. Some may find it hard to believe that a 7.4mm smartphone contains a 4,000 mAh battery, but that’s true and the phablet promises impressive battery runtimes. Combine the massive battery with power saving features of the software, processor and the Super AMOLED display and you can expect the phone to last for around two days (moderate usage).

The 16MP rear SONY camera with F/2.0 aperture features faster focus and is protected by a sapphire glass that is scratch-resistant. The in-house OIS and noise reduction technology translate into stable and blur-free photos. The powerful hardware is backed by easy-to-use and feature-rich camera app that makes taking photos easier and fun. The primary camera is able to capture detailed, colorful and sharp images in most lighting conditions. However, results in low-lighting conditions are not as impressive as during the day-time shooting. The 8MP front-facing camera works well for video calls and selfies, but the captured images are a little softer.

It’s surprising to see such a capable phone running Android 5.1 out-of-the-box as Android Marshmallow is now the norm even for entry-level phones. Hopefully the manufacturer would address the issue soon and release an update, but an old version of Android does not suit Z11 Max. Other than the old software, there is nothing serious to complain about the phablet that offers good value for the money and quite many features at a competitive price. If you are looking for a well-balanced, large-screen smartphone with all the bells and whistles of a flagship, then Z11 Max is an option worth considering. The MediaTek-based variant can help you save more money and is a better option for not-so-heavy users and casual gamers.
