Umi Plus E: Extreme Value, Premium Aspirations

If you are among those looking for a flagship smartphone that doesn’t break the bank, UMI Plus E is here to make the choice easier and offers Extreme value, powerful internals and an elegant design. The flagship smartphone promises top-notch performance and an exceptional user experience, thanks to the combo of Helio P20 Octacore processor and 6 gigs of ram. Plus E packs the processing power of a laptop in a compact body and brings exclusive features to the masses at an affordable price. Its premium aspirations become evident right after you open the customized polycarbonate box. The Google Pixel-inspired smartphone is ready to compete with other high-end phones not only in terms of design, but also in terms of raw performance and user experience.

Promoted as the first Helio P20 phone, UMI Plus E looks quite similar to Google Pixel flagship smartphone and features a 6000-series aluminum alloy unibody design. It’s easy to operate with one hand, provides a good grip and feels premium from every angle. The physical button at the front also serves as a fingerprint reader, while the dedicated camera buttons are a welcome addition and something we rarely see in smartphones. The front is home to very narrow bezels and a stunning SHARP 2.5D arc Full HD LTPS display with 3D polishing. The display is protected by a T2X glass, which isn’t so common, but gets the job done.

The display is perhaps the most important part of any smartphone and UMI Plus features a SHARP-sourced FHD display. The 5.5-inch panel offers true-to-life and vivid colors, outstanding viewing angles and doesn’t require too much power. Although there are many phones out there with much higher resolution and pixel density, the 1080p display @401ppi is more than reasonable and is also kind on the battery. The display has also been advertised as sunlight-readable so you shouldn’t have any problem with it under direct sunlight.

The 13MP Samsung-sourced camera with PDAF, dual-LED flash and autofocus is able to shoot 4K videos and features fast focus. There certainly are better cameras out there than Plus E, but the 13 MP shooter performs reasonably well in most lighting conditions. The 5 MP front-facing camera performs well whether you want to take selfies or video chat on Skype.

Helio P20 Octacore processor clocked at 2.3 Ghz, 6 gigs of ram and Mali-T880 GPU perform reasonably well and ensure a butter smooth user experience. Although 6 GB ram is probably an overkill right now, it futureproofs the investment and may help in extreme multitasking.  The MediaTek processor is also battery-friendly and generates less heat than its predecessors. The phone is able to handle even the heaviest of loads with ease and there is nothing to complain in terms of raw performance. Apps and games load quickly, multi-tasking works flawlessly and the overall UI feels butter smooth.

Battery timing

UMI somehow managed to squeeze in a massive 4000 mAh battery into Plus E, which provides excellent runtimes. The phone also supports Quick Charge and quickly tops up the battery when needed. The huge battery combined with processor’s energy saving technologies and Android’s battery saving features provides days of battery backup. Even heavy users should be able to get around two days of battery life, while the phone should last significantly more if you are not pushing it to the limits.

An elegant design, powerful internals and huge battery makes UMI Plus E a complete package, which is also available at a very competitive price. If you don’t mind the absence of NFC and are ready to sacrifice a SIM slot for memory expansion, there is not much to complain about the phone. Plus E is as close as you can get to a flagship phone without spending a fortune and sets the bar even higher for future smartphones.
